They say the lion is the king of the jungle, but I have a hard time believeing a gorilla would lose to a lion…
There are a lot of variables, but out of 100 times, who do you think would win the most? Lion or SBGorilla?
The lion is called the king of the jungle because it’s a very majestic animal that preys on many different kinds of animals and has very few predators; humans and crocodiles are the only animals that dare to kill a lion for meat or trophy, and they both are rarely able to kill a lion due to it’s raw power and strength. Lions have many competitors but few will choose to challenge them. Lions today are one of the few animals that dare to hunt humans on a regular basis.
Gorillas are one of man’s closest living relatives. They are also the strongest primate on Earth. Gorillas are very peaceful and mostly ingest vegetation. Local African tribes refer to gorillas as the people of the forest (Mountain Gorillas are referred to as people of the mountains), just like chimpanzees. Regardless to how close they are to humans they are often hunted by poachers for trophies and bush meat. Local tribes won’t consume the meat as they consider it a form of cannibalism. So instead the bush meat is sold to ignorant people that believe it to have medicinal purposes.
Due to poachers hunting gorillas more than lions, gorillas are in a much higher risk of extinction than lions. With both lion and gorilla populations dwindling, they rarely cross paths. Another reason they hardly run into each other is that lions are more of a Savannah cat and hardly ever travel into the deep jungle where gorillas dwell. Gorillas biggest threat besides their human cousins are leopards. Leopards hunt infant, sickly and elderly gorillas.
The silver back, gorilla men that are the head of their community, usually there are only one but some have two (one that would eventually challenge the elder when he gets older), protect their women and children from danger. Silver backs have the strength to tear a large cat’s jaws apart as well as break their spine with a single jerk of the tail. Since leopards are mostly solitary animals they rarely are capable of making a successful gorilla kill. Lioness hunt as a family so they would be successful in hunting gorillas and even in bringing down a silver back.
So to answer your question, individually in a gorilla vs lion the gorilla would easily win. If a pride of lions were to single out a community of gorillas, the lions will win.
